Abstract Cement is the second most consumed substance by weight in world, after water. The growing demand for reduced emissions of CO 2 urges cement industry to find materials with a low footprint, which calls substitution. An assumption study has been that sewage sludge ash (SSA), an industrial by-product, can be applied as potential substitute cement-based without compromising material performance. investigated effect partial replacement SSA mortar on hygrothermal properties mortar. Two ashes originated from wastewater treatment plants located Greater Copenhagen area, Denmark. SSAs consisted larger particles compared particles; thus cement-ash-based resulted more porous structures higher porosity was responsible decrease thermal conductivity Significant differences were recognized sorption isotherms individual components, i.e. and ashes.
